The Mall Speed-Walker by Lindsey L. (18, F, Atlanta, GA) "At age 18, I was fairly new into the world of meeting guys online (something I've since come to realize is a waste of time). But when a cute guy, who seemed interesting when we talked, asked me to meet at the Starbucks in our mall for coffee and possibly go to dinner afterwards - I said sure, why not? Afterall, I was a cute sorority girl and was able to meet new people left and right - why should this be any different? I showed up at the food court at the appointed time and didn't see him. A guy walked up to me and asked, "You're Lindsey, right?" Well, he looked nothing like his pictures to start off - those pictures were several years and better looking ago. We grabbed a coffee and he seemed nice. We decided to walk around the mall and continue our conversation. As we walked, he kept kind of lagging behind me - which I didn't think was odd, since I'm naturally a speed walker. I kept slowing down so he could keep pace - and then he kept slowing down. About ten minutes later, he stopped and said, "Hey um, I need to tell you something..." "Oh? What's that?" "Well, I don't mean to be rude, but I'm just not into this." I was dumbfounded. "Um, ok... do you want to do something else?" "No. If you hadn't noticed, I've been lagging behind you this whole time. I know I said we'd do dinner, but I'm just gonna go. Yeah." "Wow. This was your idea and... you know what? You're clearly an awkward guy who needs to talk to girls online because you're not comfortable in real life. And by the way, your pictures are from like five years ago. So no, I'm gonna leave. Have a nice life." I promptly turned around and walked away. I ended up at my favorite store, bought a killer outfit, and went to a party that night - where I ended up making out with one of the cutest guys on campus - who bought me breakfast at 3 a.m. Moral of the story... stay away from the computer. Go out and meet people naturally. It's somehow less awkward."
