"Do You Believe in Witchcraft?" by smurfie r. (16, F, somerset, NJ) "We were both in high school and had kinda been a "thing" for a while. Ya know, we hadn't gone out, but everyone just knew we were together. So one day he asked me out--maybe it was the rebellious mohawk or the leather biker jacket, but I was thrilled. So finally the day arrives and we meet up at the pizza place. All was going well; we talked about books, movies, school, everything. One thing bothered me though--he couldn't look away from me. I don't mean like he was absorbing every word I said, or he was so enamored that he just couldn't take his eyes off me--I mean it was like his eyes forgot how to blink, and his head forgot how to turn. I was getting a little creeped out, but I figured he's just nervous. The date ended and I leaned in hoping for a kiss and got a wave instead. Fine. Whatever. His friends had warned me before that he was a bit of a prude (how they knew that, I'll never know). So I went home and jumped on AIM and shortly he was on too. We were talking about how much fun we had and what we should do for our next date, when all of a sudden he goes quiet. "What's up?" I ask, curiously. "There's something I've been meaning to tell you, and it's not what you're thinking." "Ok, what is it?" "I kinda don't wanna tell you though." I don't have much patience for indecisiveness, but I was trying to be nice... about a half hour of coaxing later, I get this: "Do you believe in witchcraft?" "ummm... not really. Why, do you?" "what if I could prove it to you?" "what?" "What if i could prove to you that witchcraft is real?" Now, you have to understand, I have no quarrels with witchcraft or anyone who believes in it, I fully respect everyone's religious and spiritual beliefs; I'm just comfy being a lapsed catholic... "I like my own beliefs..." "With witchcraft I can raise my body temperature. I'll prove it to you." "I'm good, thanks." "Then this isn't gonna work." I was dumped because I didn't want to start following his beliefs, or see him raise his body temp. Long story short, he went quiet for a while. I got him talking again in time for him to threaten to kill himself. I tried calling him and talking to him to make sure he wouldn't do anything, but he was not in a talking mood. In the end he didn't kill himself (YAY!!!) and him and I stayed as good friends (YAY AGAIN!!!), but I will never forget it--my first date ever ended with witchcraft and a suicide threat."
